Sports in Berlin, Germany
Berlin is the self-proclaimed sportiest city in Germany, with 1 Billion Euros being generated every year within the city through sports events, and 15,000 Berliners employed in the sports sector. There are numerous elite athletes and teams based in the city, with the Olympic Support Centre renowned throughout Germany and Europe as a hub for top class athletic development.
One of the biggest football teams in Germany, Hertha Berlin, is based at the Olympic Stadium in the city, and has had a proverbial rollercoaster history, however some of the most passionate fans in the country.
Another team that enjoys a fanatic support is the Berlin Eisbaren (Ice Bears), the ice hockey team of Berlin. They are currently Germany’s most successful team in recent years, winning four championships in the last 5 years. They play their home games at Hohenschönhausen, one of Europe’s most state of the art arenas, holding 14,500 spectators for the Ice Bears home games.
The other Berlin team to share the O2 World at Hohenschönhausen is the basketball team Alba Berlin. More than 11,000 people attend home court games, and have seen the team become a true success story, having won eight National Championships, five National Cups and have also become European Champions.
For those looking to enjoy more recreational sports there is a whole range of activities to enjoy, including the city’s parks, used for running, playing football, Frisbee, as well as more exclusive sports to play and enjoy in the city including golf and polo. If you are feeling particularly fit then there is the Berlin Marathon which will allow you to take in the wonders of the city, whilst completing one of the world’s greatest challenges.
